Uniqueness

Center for Urban Studies (CUS) UPJ is a Center of Excellence for collaborative, multidisciplinary, and interdisciplinary learning and applied research in sustainable urban development.

At the heart of our mission is a commitment to fostering a sustainable urban future. Our center functions as a melting pot for innovative ideas, bringing together faculties from diverse fields to address the complex challenges of urbanization. Our unique approach seamlessly blends academic insight with real-world applications.

CUS spearheads collaborative research and activities in five distinct areas, each representing a crucial facet of sustainable urban development:

  1. Urban Mobility
We delve into cutting-edge solutions that redefine how people move within urban landscapes. From green transportation systems to sustainable public transit, our research aims to enhance accessibility while minimizing environmental impact.
  2. Urban Resilience
Recognizing the increasing vulnerability of cities to various climate-related threats, we focus on building resilient urban ecosystems. Our studies explore strategies to fortify cities against natural disasters, climate change, and other challenges, ensuring they can withstand and recover from adversity.
  3. City Metrics
In the age of data, we emphasize the importance of informed decision-making. Our work in city metrics involves developing comprehensive urban datasets and frameworks to measure and analyze urban performance, guiding policymakers towards effective and data-driven governance.
  4. Smart and Green Tech Cities
Embracing the digital age, CUS research in smart and green technologies helps to transform cities into intelligent, sustainable entities. From smart infrastructure, green architecture, to eco-friendly energy solutions, we strive to make urban living efficient, eco-conscious, and technologically adaptive.
  5. Urban Lifestyle, People & Culture
We recognize that true sustainability goes beyond infrastructure; it's also about the people who inhabit these spaces. Our studies in urban lifestyle, people, and culture explore creative ways to promote inclusive and vibrant urban environments that cater to the diverse needs of their inhabitants.

The significance of CUS also extends beyond academic pursuits, as it aligns closely with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By addressing the various dimensions of sustainable urban development, we contribute directly to several SDGs, for example:

  • Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure): Through our emphasis on smart and green technologies, we contribute to building resilient infrastructure and fostering innovation.
  • Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities): CUS actively engages in research areas that directly align with creating sustainable urban environments, promoting inclusive urbanization, and enhancing resilience.
  • Goal 13 (Climate Action): Our work in urban resilience and green technologies directly addresses the challenges of climate change, promoting sustainable practices that mitigate environmental impact.
